The word "security" derives from the Latin words meaning "care for yourself". This definition illustrates why security is a basic ecological function. Although security departments are often peripheral and security measures may be an afterthought for business and the individual, security itself is central to how people gain a living. Any family seeking to survive must not only gather its food and supplies, but also protect these from predators. This fundamental principle helps us to think about security in a broader context than locks, bolts, and badges.
